How to Get Rid of Fire Ants in a Mount Pleasant Yard

Clemson Cooperative Extension recommends a two-step fire ant management program for South Carolina homeowners. Step one is a broadcast bait application across the entire yard in spring and again in fall. Step two is spot treatment of individual mounds in sensitive areas — near play equipment, HVAC units, and high-traffic paths. This combination works better and costs less than treating individual mounds alone.

Step 1: broadcast bait

Apply bait in April or May before peak fire ant activity and again in September or October. Broadcast at 1-2 pounds of product per acre — do not overapply, because bait is most effective when workers treat it as a food find rather than an overwhelming threat. Apply in the late afternoon or evening when workers are actively foraging. Do not apply before rain or when temperatures exceed 90°F. Results are visible in 4-8 weeks.

Step 2: individual mound treatment

For mounds in sensitive locations — near a door, under the AC condenser, adjacent to a sandbox — spot treatment while the broadcast bait is working reduces immediate hazard. Contact insecticide drenches work faster than bait but do not kill the colony; use them for safety reasons in high-risk areas while the bait program completes its work on the broader population.

What a professional adds

A SCDPR-licensed applicator uses professional-grade bait formulations (fipronil or indoxacarb based) at the correct rate, applies at the optimal time in the seasonal cycle, and can treat hard-to-reach areas including fire ant colonies in irrigation valve boxes, electrical conduit runs, and other infrastructure where consumer application is impractical. Many quarterly pest control plans include broadcast bait as part of the exterior service.
