Yellowjackets vs Wasps in South Carolina: Species ID and Risk Guide

The word wasp covers a wide range of stinging insects in South Carolina, from the nearly harmless mud dauber to the aggressive yellowjacket that will pursue you 30 feet from a disturbed nest. Correctly identifying the species is the first step to deciding whether to treat, when, and how.

Paper wasps

Several paper wasp species are common in the Lowcountry; the most prevalent is the red paper wasp (Polistes carolina), recognizable by its rusty red coloring and the distinctive open, umbrella-shaped nest with visible cells. Paper wasps are moderately defensive; they will sting if the nest is directly disturbed but do not pursue far from the nest site. Nests peak at 20-50 workers in late summer. Single small nests in low-traffic locations cause minimal risk.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets (Vespula and Dolichovespula species) are the high-risk stinging insect in South Carolina. Colonies peak at 3,000-5,000 workers in August and September, and late-summer colonies are extremely defensive — a vibration from a lawnmower 15 feet from a ground nest entrance can trigger mass stinging. In SC, yellowjackets commonly nest in ground cavities (abandoned rodent burrows), wall voids, attic spaces, and hollow trees. The banded yellow-and-black pattern and rapid, agitated flight distinguish them from the slower-moving paper wasp.

Bald-faced hornets

Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata) build the large gray paper-envelope nests visible in trees and on building exteriors. They are black and white, not yellow. Colonies reach 400-700 workers and are aggressively defensive throughout late summer. Unlike yellowjackets, the nest is visible — which is both the warning and the reason people disturb it accidentally. Professional treatment is warranted for any bald-faced hornet nest within ten feet of a doorway or high-traffic area.

Mud daubers

Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build the familiar clay tubes on exterior walls. A single female builds and provisions each tube — there is no colony, no workers, and essentially no sting threat from normal proximity. They are beneficial insects and should be left unless their nesting location is genuinely problematic.
